Boston Bowel Preparation Scale

Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) is a scoring system for the assessment of bowel preparation at colonoscopy. Each segment of the colon (left colon, transverse colon, right colon) is scored between 0 and 3 points according to its cleansing.

  • 0 – mucosa not visualised due to presence of solid stool
  • 1 – mucosa partially visualised due to liquid and semisolid residues
  • 2 – small fluid residues allow for good visualisation of the mucosa
  • 3 – excellent visualisation of the mucosa, no residues
