The Lichtiger index is used for the diagnosis and follow-up of the acute severe colitis. It is a simple but useful score, based only on clinical information, that can be easily calculated daily.
Interpretation:
- a score >10 points defines the acute severe colitis
- the response to medical treatment is defined by a score <10 points two days consecutively, or a decrease of at least 3 points when comparing with the initial score
